Joan Tuggle Nicholas

Joan T. Nicholas, 85, of Quintown, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022 at her residence. Joan was born on May 29, 1937 in Pumpkin Center, AL to John Oble and Maudie (Skelton) Tuggle. On June 15, 1954, she married John Thomas Nicholas. She graduated from Dora High School in 1952 and received her Associates Degree in Home Economics in 1954 from Alabama Christian College in Montgomery, AL. Joan worked as a dispatcher for fast freight companies in the Birmingham area while Johnny preached and pursued his BS in Education. She “retired” from this job when their third child was born. She spent the next chapter of her life tending four precious and precocious children, organizing the comings and goings of the family of six, managing the Nicholas farm (planting, harvesting, preserving fruits and vegetables each summer), teaching Bible classes with Johnny and children’s classes at church, spending time with neighbors, and preparing amazing meals and desserts for her family and the neighborhood children. She returned to work for about a decade in the 80s-90s to help pay college bills for the kids. She spent the next several decades loving, spoiling, reading to, playing games with, and photographing her twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Nicholas; parents, John Oble and Maudie Skelton Tuggle; and two brothers-in-law, Bill Trickey and James Wooley. Survivors include her four children, Mark Nicholas and wife Debbie, Elise Lovett and husband Randall, Blake Nicholas and wife Sami, and Rene Heard and husband Chris; twelve grandchildren, Daniel Nicholas and wife Whitney, Laura Harris and husband Jordan, Becca Grant and husband Andrew, Benji Nicholas and wife Jill, Caleb Nicholas and wife Ashli, Tiqua Lovett, Reuben Lovett and wife Sarah, Abel Nicholas and wife Michelle, Song Nicholas, Job Nicholas, Nathan Heard and wife Sarah, and Nicholas Heard; ten great grandchildren, Colby Grant, Laurel Nicholas, Cooper Grant, James Harris, Asher Nicholas, Case Grant, Julian Harris, Julia Nicholas, Jayden Harris, and Thomas Lovett, (great grandchild #11 due in January); siblings, Clayton Tuggle and wife Gayle, Clifton Tuggle and wife Neta, Donna Fleming and husband Jerry, and Sylvia Wooley; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be Friday, December 30, 2022 at 2 pm at Quintown Church of Christ 4124 Okahola Rd. Quinton, AL 35130. The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Church of Christ cemetery in Pumpkin Center.
