Jean Vanderver Latham

Jean Carroll Vanderver Latham, 90, of Quinton, AL, went to be with the Lord on August 19, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Samuel Richard Latham Sr.; her parents Odis and Janie Vanderver; and her sister and brother-in-law, Dolores (David) McWhirter of Houston, TX. She is survived by her children Sam (Colleen) Latham and Diana (Harry) Ponder whom she loved dearly and by God’s blessings provided her with seven grandchildren: Glenn and James Ponder; Molly Latham, Emma (Nathan) Godwin, and Sarah, Sammy, and Mattie Latham; as well as one great-grandchild, Collin Ponder. She also leaves behind nephews, nieces, and cousins, many of whom also lived in “Vanderver Town” - the area homesteaded by her great grandfather consisting of family farms and filled with wonderful childhood memories of churning butter, collecting eggs, and enjoying the beauty around her. Jean was an amazing woman, wife, mother, and homemaker whose house was always clean and cozy. She was instrumental in the design and building of two homes that she and her husband built. She was also a very talented painter. And Jean almost always had a camera with her and was known as the family historian. Because of her dedication to capture all the special moments on film, she has chronicled many generations of family history. Her family is eternally grateful for her quiet commitment behind the scenes to record, detail, organize and keep accurate records of life’s special moments and God’s bountiful blessings. Many of those organizational skills she learned as a secretary for the Sargent and Lundy Company in Chicago, where she and her high school sweetheart moved to find work and adventure as newlyweds after his service in the Navy during the Korean War. After returning to Alabama, she worked as a secretary for Rust Engineering until she made the decision to be a stay-at-home mom to her children. She excelled as a homemaker often making their clothes, helping in their schools, and always having a good supper on the table. Most importantly, she taught them about Jesus and lived a simple, straight forward life before them. Jean was a faithful member of Quintown Church of Christ and continued to drive herself to church even at 90 years old. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 2pm at New Horizon Chapel. Burial will follow in Freewill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2pm at the funeral home. Pastor and friend Tommy Alford will be officiating.
