Betty Allums Burtram

Betty Allums Burtram, 75, of Bagley, passed away on January 26, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born November 5, 1949. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Lucy Allums. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Benny Burtram; daughter Shanna (Billy) Cencula; son Benjamin Burtram and girlfriend, Maria Alvarez, “bonus” daughter Ava (Joshua) Leone; granddaughters Anna Claire and Caroline Cencula; “bonus” grandchildren, Naya and Xavier Leone-Gillum; sisters Carol Williams and Marsha (Bucky) Kinsaul; “third sister” Ann (Terry) Coleman; sister-in-law Joyce (Doug) Carlisle, brothers-in-law Jack (Ruth) Burtram, Ronald (Sandra) Burtram, and Rene (Linda) Williams; beloved nieces and nephews whom she cherished as daughters and sons. After graduating from Corner High School in 1968, Betty attended the University of Alabama, receiving her degree in 1972. During her college years she became a member of Delta Gamma sorority and participated in numerous college organizations. She received her master’s degree in education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Betty spent her adult life in education, working as a teacher in Jefferson County for over 30 years. She began her teaching career at Bagley Jr. High School, and later taught at Corner High School from 1980 to 2008. During this time she taught physical education, history, and government and economics. The highlight of her teaching career was implementing the “We the People” competition program, challenging students to become more educated about the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Her competition teams participated in local, state, and national events, including multiple trips to compete in Washington, D.C. During her teaching career she also held the following roles: track coach, cheerleading, yearbook, and senior sponsor; in addition to serving on numerous school committees. She was a member of the Corner Alumni Association, at one time serving as president. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy. Gatherings at her pool were particularly enjoyable for her family and friends. Her home was always welcoming. July 4th parties Betty and Benny hosted were the highlight of the year. Traveling with family and friends was a particular pleasure. Numerous trips to Disney World, New York, and several European countries created many wonderful memories. Betty was an avid Alabama football fan, including being a Tide Pride member. She attended games at Bryant-Denny stadium as well as multiple SEC games. The national championship game she attended in California gave special meaning to “Remember the Rose Bowl”. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 31, 2025, at 2:00 pm in the New Horizon chapel. Visitation prior to the service will begin at 12:30.
