John T. Nicholas (Johnny), 87, of Quintown, Alabama, died Sunday, February 28, 2016 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Quintown Church of Christ, Quinton, Alabama 35130. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Church of Christ Cemetery in Pumpkin Center. John was born March 2, 1928 in Lumberport, West Virginia to Thurman and Evylena (Davis) Nicholas. On June 15, 1954 he married Barbara Joan Tuggle, of Pumpkin Center, Alabama. He graduated from Chester County High School, Henderson, TN, in 1946, received a BS in Education from Birmingham Southern in 1959, and an M.Ed. from Samford University in 1968. Later in life he pursued formal theological studies at Alabama Christian School of Religion and Slidell Baptist Seminary culminating with a Doctorate of Theology in 2000. “Mr. Nick” was employed as a teacher for 33 years in Montgomery and Jefferson County, Alabama, and served as a gospel preacher for several different congregations of the church of Christ in Walker County, Alabama for more than 40 years. John is survived by his wife Joan Tuggle Nicholas; his sister, Marie McCormack of Nashville, TN; and a sister-in-law, Beth Nicholas of Okeechobee, FL; two sons and two daughters, Mark Nicholas and his wife Debbie of Jackson, TN, Elise Lovett and her husband Randall of Cordova, AL, Blake Nicholas and his wife Sami of Corinth, MS, and Rene Heard and her husband Chris of Moorpark, CA; twelve grandchildren, Daniel Nicholas and his wife Whitney, Laura Harris and her husband Jordan, Becca Grant and her husband Andrew, Benjamin Nicholas, Caleb Nicholas, Tiqua Lovett, Reuben Lovett, Abel Nicholas and his wife Michelle, Song Nicholas, Job Nicholas, Nathan Heard and Nicholas Heard; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Evylena, his brother Gordon, two sisters, Virginia Smith and her husband Randall and Doris June Jones and her husband Robert, and a brother-in-law Nick McCormack.
